Berwick to Exceat

6 June. Five of us joined Sally at Berwick station in spite of the dreadful weather forecast of wind and rain. We were rewarded by an unexpectedly dry morning when the sun even showed up.

Following the Vanguard way we reached Berwick St Michael of all Angels church, decorated by the fanciful Bloomsbury group.

We progressed through barley fields undulating in the wind. At the lunch stop in the pretty Alfriston village, our luck turned and the predicted rain and wind arrived in force. After a unanimous vote, we ignore the drop out possibility and carried on the Vanguard way, along the river Cuckemere, passing some placid cattle.

A few overheard remarks in the afternoon:
” Well, we knew it would rain”
“I prefer this than the heat”
“Very good for the skin”
There might have been an “Are we there yet?”

When we arrived at Exceat, we could compare our respective rainwear efficacy.
The bus arrived quickly to take us to Seaford.
We were then faced with the litany of delays, cancellation, trespassers on line etc.
So we had  a nice long tea stop at the lovely Lewes cafe and eventually got home.
