Witley to Haslemere, 4 Oct
TEN miles. This is a replacement for the walk on the orginal programme, with lunch at Hindhead.
Train: Buy a day return from London Waterloo to Haslemere. Our train (final destination Haslemere) departs London Waterloo at 08.45, arrives Witley 09.42. First stop is Woking. If the train is 10 or 12 coaches, we need to be in the front 6, as the platform at Witley is short. I’ll be in coach 6 from the front. There are no toilets at Witley station.
The walk: We will do two thirds of the walk in the morning, about 3.5 hours. There’s a fair bit of climbing, about 1,000 feet. The ascents are mostly steady, but there’s a short tricky descent where poles might be helpful.
We’ll have a mid-morning break, so bring a snack. Lunch is at Hindhead, National Trust café, picnic or Devils Punchbowl Hotel. It’ll be about 1.15 pm when we reach Hindhead.
The afternoon is gently downhill to Haslemere village and the station which should take us about 1.5 hours. There are 3 trains per hour back to London..
Break-off: There’s an hourly bus service, No 19, at 26 minutes past the hour, from Hindhead to Haslemere if anyone wants to omit the afternoon section.
