Stonegate to Robertsbridge, 24 May
NB: TRAIN TIMES HAVE CHANGED. Because the morning is relatively short, we shall take a train one hour later than shown on the original programme. New times are: Charing Cross, 09.34; Waterloo East, 09.37; London Bridge 09.43; arr Stonegate 10. 56. Please buy a return ticket to Robertsbridge.
The walk: is 9/10 miles through undulating meadows and woodland. It may be muddy if wet (and some rain is currently forecast). I didn’t use my poles on the recce, but may do if it is raining. There are quite a few stiles, and some are awkward (too high, too narrow, or too wonky). We pass some cattle, and also sheep with lambs. A couple of short stretches on a busy road, and one rail line crossing.
Lunch is in the pretty village of Burwash, with a pub option, a cafe, or a picnic spot with stunning views. There is a two-hourly bus from Burwash to Etchingham rail station, which is the only possible drop-out point.
Return from Robertsbridge by hourly train service (usually 14 minutes past hour), with the Ostrich pub to relax in if we have to wait for the train.
