Wimbledon to Richmond, 10 May

Published by Morley Ramblers on

This is a leisurely 8 miles walk through gardens, parks & woods. We hope to see lots of spring flowers. The walk is all within the Freedom Pass area.

Train: As in the published programme, the train departs at 8.42 from Waterloo and arrives at 8.58 at Wimbledon. It stops at Vauxhall and Clapham Junction on the way.

When you arrive at Wimbledon, take the exit signposted for Wimbledon Village, go through the ticket barriers and we’ll meet near the ticket office. If you wish to make use of the facilities, you’ll find the toilets before you go out the ticket barriers, down the steps near the entrance to the District Line platforms.

Lunch: Picnic or use the cafe at Pembroke Lodge in Richmond Park.

Dropouts: The leader is not aware of any easy opportunities for leaving the walk by public transport.

Hazards: The main hazard is from cyclists on Wimbledon Common and in Richmond Park, so please keep alert for them.

Summary of the Walk: The walk is mostly flat with only two longish uphill and one downhill sections. The morning is about 6 miles and the afternoon about 2 miles.

After a walk on pavements up the hill to Wimbledon Village, we walk through Cannizaro Park and across Wimbledon Common to Richmond Park, where we go to the Isabella Plantation. Then we cross Richmond Park to our lunch stop at Pembroke Lodge.

After lunch, we exit the park through Richmond Gate, go down through the Terrace Gardens to the River Thames and walk along the towpath until we turn off to cross Richmond Green. There are frequent trains from Richmond to Waterloo and there are plenty of cafes and pubs in Richmond for those who wish to stay longer.
