Berkhampsted to Tring, 2 March

Published by Havil on

8.5 to 10 miles

Travel: Buy a return to Tring from Euston. Take the 9.39 train (destination Milton Keynes) to arrive at Berkhampsted at 10.16. There should be toilets on the train, with possible facilities at Berkhampsted. There is a possible option of the walk returning to Berkhampsted, but the return to Tring is only a marginal cost difference.

Any opt out would be at lunch after approximately 5 miles. There is a bus service to Tring station or a relatively short walking route directly to that station.

Lunch: Aldbury has a cafe, pub, post office and church, all hopefully open. The preference will be to use the cafe providing soup, savouries, cakes etc. Please inform Tony by Thursday evening if you definitely want to be included in a lunch booking.

The walk: There is a short but sharp incline in the morning and again after lunch. There are no stiles, and the walking would be described as easy except for the conditions underfoot.  There will be mud, especially difficult on the bridleways, and probably standing water in places.

The walk ends along the towpath of the Grand Union canal. It is a little over half an hour to reach Tring station where there are no facilities (the town is miles away), but hopefully a maximum 20 minute waiting time.

The group will have an option to return to Berkhampsted adding about an additional mile to the canal walk. The advantage along with the extra exercise, is that Berkhampsted is a very pleasant town with many shops and facilities to visit before returning home. There are similar train connections to the Tring options.

Hope to see you, with suitable footwear! Tony (walks@morleyramblers.uk)
