West Norwood to Stockwell, Thursday 26 October

Published by Crisps on

This walk is for Black History Month. Along the route I draw attention to the blue plaques and memorials commemorating people and events relevant to Black history – mainly in the UK . We also see several of the famous Brixton murals.

The route is about 6 miles and all on hard surfaces.

Meet at West Norwood Station at 10.30 a.m.

We start with a tour of West Norwood Cemetery indicating the graves of Black people of note . This takes about an hour.

We then take a bus to Herne Hill Station and walk up Railton Road to the centre of Brixton.

Lunch is in Brixton Market – or you can stop at the cafe in the Black Cultural archives if it’s open.

After lunch we walk through North Brixton with a possible tea stop at Myatts Field Park if time allows.

The walk ends at Stockwell tube station.

There are plenty of drop out points en route.

As it is tiring stopping to listen to information on the way I have prepared a handout about all the people whose plaques/ dwellings/ art works we pass so you won’t have to listen to me talk – except maybe in the cemetery.
