Train departure is 9.27 am from Kings Cross, arriving 9.56 at Welwyn Garden City.
Summary of Walk
The morning is about 7 miles and the afternoon about 4 miles.
The morning’s walk is mostly through woods and fields with a few short sections along country lanes. Our lunch stop is at Ayot St. Lawrence, which has an atmospheric, ruined Gothic church and an historic 16th Century pub. Those who picnic can join the rest of the group in the pub.
The afternoon starts with country lanes, then moves into the landscaped parkland of Ayot Montfitchet stately home, a disused railway line and woods before reaching Welwyn Garden City station for our return train.
Hazards
The walk is mostly level with only a few small descents and ascents. The country lanes are narrow, so the usual warnings apply that walkers should be in single file on those sections. We pass across a golf course where everyone will need to follow the warning signs about which direction to looking out for golfers and waiting for them to finish playing.
Dropout Points
Unfortunately, there are no easy dropout points on this walk. It may be possible to organise a taxi from the lunchtime pub.
