Berkhamsted

Saturday July 11th

Hopefully a Morley Ramblers first as nobody joined me at Berkhamsted. Readers should note that the lunchtime temperature was predicted around 30 degrees, so we possibly should have cancelled. Members sensibly voted with their feet.

The town provided a very pleasant walk. There was shade along the canal and some woodland walk. Over a bridge to a pleasant canalside park, then back over for a stroll down the High Street. A colourful market and a cool supermarket to replace the planned lunch stop.

The castle remains are next to the station and we never usually have an opportunity to look round. It is well worthwhile, and an appropriate time as the Bayeux Tapestry comes to London. This rare example of a Norman motte and bailey construction was first built in 1067, the Saxon nobles having surrendered to William at Berkhamsted.

About two hours, let’s call it 4 miles. There was a beer festival in the afternoon. I didn’t go.
