Great Chesterford to Newport, 25 April
Travel Train from London Liverpool Street, departs at 09.24, calling at Tottenham Hale at 09.38 and arriving at Great Chesterford at 10.32. This is the Cambridge North train. Buy a return to Great Chesterford from boundary zone 6.
The Walk A mixture of sweeping rolling hills and quaint little villages, the landscape looks stunning at present with bright yellow fields of rapeseed plants. There are no stiles and well defined paths on fairly flat terrain with a couple of steep uphill sections – one in the morning and a shorter one in the afternoon. The ground is currently dry and parched, so unless it rains heavily before the weekend, poles shouldn’t be needed.
Lunch At the ancient town of Saffron Walden which has a bustling Saturday market in the main square. There are lots of pubs and cafes, so I will not be booking a table beforehand. There are seats around the market square for those who wish to picnic. The Fry Art Gallery is nearby and well worth a visit – if time permits.
Drop out point At Saffron Walden from the bus stop at Church Street (en route to the town centre); buses run to Audley End Station. This is ideal for those who wish to do just the first part of the walk – about 5 miles. Buses run to the station from this bus stop at 4 minutes past the hour. Trains from Audley End run back to London at 17 and 39 minutes past the hour.
