Kenley to Coulsdon South, 14 Feb
Trains: London Bridge 9.40, East Croydon 9.58, arr Kenley 10.14. This is the train for Caterham and Tattenham Corner, which divides at Purley. We need to be in the Caterham half (which is usually the front half). Trains back from Coulsdon South run four times an hour. (All within travel zone 6.)
The walk is 9-10 miles, through commons, woodland and fields, with some excellent views across the Surrey/London borders. It includes several short steep hills, both up and down, which will be very muddy and slippery following all the rain. Poles are recommended for those who use them.
Lunch is at the Boundary on the Green, near Coulsdon Common. The Fox, where we usually go, is closed for renovations. The menu at the Boundary looks like average pub fare, also good picnic accommodation on the benches nearby on the Green.
Drop-out point: Buses 466 and 404 stop close to the lunch pub. The 466 will take you to Purley or East Croydon, the less frequent 404 will take you to Coulsdon South station.
Highlights: A chance to see the twelfth century murals, if the Church at Chaldon is open (which can’t be guaranteed). Views.
Hazards: Mud and slopes.
I hope to see you on Saturday! Janet
