The Line from Stratford

25 January. There were eight of us for this inaugural walk – the first time it has ever appeared on a Morley Ramblers programme.

The Line is East London’s public art trail that connects Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and The 02, following the waterways and the line of the Greenwich Meridian.  Its outdoor exhibition programme offers a journey through a dynamic urban landscape where everyone can explore art, nature and heritage for free.  (The feature image shows Madge Gill’s Spirit Guide)

Helping Hand, by Alec Peever. Memorial to men who died helping others in the Three Bridges tragedy of 1901.
At Three Mills. In the top left of the picture you can spot Untitled (Juniper) by Virginia Overton, a weather vane in steel and gold leaf featuring a juniper tree to commemorate the former gin mill.

The morning started with a bit of light drizzle which gradually cleared, but the day remained damp as we walked The Line from sculpture to sculpture with a brief picnic at Cody Dock, and on to The IFS Cloud cable car.to travel over The Thames.  No one dropped out, and all eight of us fitted into the same car.  I kept my eyes closed until Wren’s Royal Naval College came into view, and my vertigo vanished.

My grateful thanks to those walking companions who joined me to walk The Line, evoking our industrial past and artistic present.
