Stratford to North Greenwich (the Line walk), Sunday 25 Jan

Published by Morley Ramblers on

NB this walk has been moved to SUNDAY 25 Jan.  It is approximately 5 to 6 miles

Meeting points: Arrive at Stratford – overground, Elizabeth Line or DLR – follow the exit signs to Westfield Shopping Centre

09.45 am   Use the loos in Westfield Shopping Centre before we meet

10.00 am Meet at the information desk between M&S Food Hall and Pret, facing                 Mountfitchet Street

Food: Please bring a picnic lunch.  We will stop at Victoria Dock for a quick lunch and drink at a cafe.

The Walk: The Line is East London’s public art trail that connects Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and The 02, following the waterways and the line of the Greenwich Meridian.  Its outdoor exhibition programme offers a journey through a dynamic urban landscape where everyone can explore art, nature and heritage for free.

I did this walk several weeks ago with South Bank – we may see 22 sculptures rather than 24 as 2 of the plinths were empty.  The route is not difficult but, as I have only done it once, it may not run as smoothly as I would like.

Although the walk is short in mileage, there will be a lot of stopping and starting as we pause to view the sculptures.  And the walk is on concrete.  There is some gentle uphill at the start to the Olympic Park.  The lifts were not working at Star Lane, so we had to use the steep stairs to cross to the other side. The loos may be open at Cody Dock.

Some busy road work from Star Lane to Royal Victoria.  Unpleasant.  Please take care at all traffic light crossings – no jay-walking, please.

IFS Cloud Cable Car – Freedom Pass users to purchase tickets at ticket hall – £3.50.  Non-freedom pass holders will need to book in advance.   Please check:  https://tfl.gov.uk/fares/find-fares/ifs-cloud-cable-car-fares   THE CABLE CAR MAY NOT BE SUITABLE FOR  VERTIGO SUFFERS – but I survived.

The walk continues along the Greenwich Peninsula to view the  remaining sculptures and finishes at North Greenwich station.  There are lots of cafes there as well.

 Drop out points

  1. Double back to Stratford if you tire near the start of the walk.
  2. Star Lane DLR station – back to Stratford
  3. Canning Town DLR
  4. Royal Victoria Dock D

The Virtues: An interesting walk both historically and present day.  Lots of photo opportunities.  Good views of The Royal Naval College Greenwich and London from the cable car.

The Risks : Concrete – please take care. Please try  not to fall – accidental contact with concrete is unforgiving!  Keep well away from the edge of waterways.  Steep stairs at Star Lane DLR station.

Vertigo – the cable car may stop and start briefly when we are over The Thames.
