Bayford Circular

Published by Morley Ramblers on

10 January. A refreshing seven-mile walk in gentle Hertfordshire countryside on a cold, and somewhat cloudy post-festivities Saturday. It was a deserted landscape. We only saw a couple of other walkers, and a few local dog owners – and their dogs!

We started across a golf course – with mutual respect between ourselves and the players – then along a byway towards a hill with dotted with farms, former farm cottages and larger houses towards Newgate Street and St Mary’s church our snack stop.

Onwards, and eventually upwards into a peaceful landscape past the Water Tower at Epping Green  towards Little Berkhamsted.

Early daffodils
and a late snowman

We enjoyed a convivial lunch at the Five Horseshoes pub, then viewed St Andrew’s church – some lovely stained glass windows – before striding past Stratton’s Folly tower, down across to Bayford Wood – with its beeches – and onto the home strait of Bayford village and its outlying station. The six of us thoroughly enjoyed our outing – and its accessibility to London.

Sally, with thanks to Christine M for photos.
