Lewes Circular, 11 Oct

Published by Morley Ramblers on

Train: departs 9.26 from London Bridge, arrives 10.26 Lewes (NOT from Victoria as previously announced).

Walk: Ten Miles. Morning walking up on the Downs above Kingston village, dropping down to Rodmell for lunch (arrival time 13.00 to 13.15). Sally will book a table at the pub Abergavenny Arms, so please let her know by Friday lunchtime, whether or not you want to dine in (non-members please contact walks@morleyramblers.uk). Picnic spaces can be found

Monks House, Rodmell was the home of Virginia and Leonard Woolf, and the house and garden are open on Fridays and Saturdays 12.30 to 16.00 (16.30 garden). According to the website, pre-booking is essential, so if walkers are keen they must reserved in advance. nationaltrust.org.uk

I don’t think there will be time for both a leisurely sit down pub lunch and a visit to Monks House if members want to continue with the afternoon walk. However, they can after a visit (or early break off) either catch the bus back to Lewes at 14.19, or trains leave from Southease station to Lewes (£3.70 and takes 7 minutes) at five minutes past the hour.

The afternoon walk is an alternative from the usual slog on the River Ouse banks. Instead we shall follow a footpath at the foot of the Downs  from Rodmell to Iford and Swanborough, through to Kingston and Lewes. Trains leave from Lewes every 30 minutes and the station cafe is open until 18.50.
