Dover to Deal, 14 June
NB This is a change of walk from published programme.
Train: London St Pancras 9.07 arrive Dover 10.13 (Or, cheaper but twice the time, Victoria 8.10 arrive Dover 10.09). NB No freedom pass on high speed. Buy a return to Deal. Return trains from Deal at 28 and 32 minutes past the hour. Loo stops at Dover station,
Lunch: Bring sandwiches. Picnic lunch at St Margaret’s Bay with pub for refreshments.
The Walk: 10 miles. Two steep climbs. Otherwise some gentle undulation, uneven ground and a long flat stretch back to the station at Deal . The forecast is good; bring sun hat and plenty of sunscreen.
See the former home of Ian Fleming at the base of the cliffs – far end of St Margaret’s Bay. On a clear day, views over to the White Cliffs of Calais.
National Trust loos on the cliffs and at St Margaret’s Bay. If time for tea before the return train, avoid the seafront, and head for a cafe en route to the station (if they will still be open). No drop out points unless one calls for a taxi from St Margaret’s Bay or takes the train back from Walmer.
OPTIONAL extra drop out – bring your National Trust card in case you wish to join a guided tour and climb to the top of a lighthouse, and make your own way on to Walmer or Deal.
