Stonegate to Robertsbridge

Published by Janet V on

24 May. This is one of my favourite walks. It is somehow a particularly green walk. You get immersed in the hills and meadows of the East Sussex weald.

From Stonegate, ten of us made our way to Burwash for lunch, where we were joined by an intrepid eleventh who caught us up, having missed our train. After lunch, we had some awkward stiles, but some accommodating cattle (who obligingly ambled ahead of us). And many sheep and lambs.

This walks also provides some interesting contrasts in the way that landowners react to finding themselves in charge of public footpaths (‘Come in to my footpath’ or ‘Keep off my land’)

Yet a third landowner (a farming community) is living happily in the past.

We got to Robertsbridge 15 minutes before the (hourly) train, so no visit to the Ostrich pub this time. Janet, with thanks to Christine M, Christine R, France and Sigrid for photos.
