East Grinstead Circular, 31 May
Train departs London Victoria, 9.20. Calls at Clapham Junction 9.27, East Croydon 9.40. East Grinstead 10.40
No apologies, but this is a recycled walk, done in the opposite direction in 2022.
The morning section is 9km, and the afternoon 7 km. However, this can be shortened to 6km or avoided altogether by taking a bus back from Forest Row to East Grinstead station.
The forecast is for a warm day so please bring plenty of water and perhaps a snack for the longish morning.
In the morning, we will walk from East Grinstead to Forest Row, via Tablehurst Farm. This is an award-winning community farm so you might wish to get something tasty from the farm shop for your supper. There are a couple of tricky stiles around Stoke Brunswick school. There are also some sections with brambles so bare legs probably not the best.
Lunch: We will lunch at Forest Row, either a picnic at the church, or a pub or café. The Brambletye bar, attached to an hotel, serves simple stuff and the more larger Swan has a more ambitious and extensive menu. There’s also The Chequers and a couple of cafes. Either way I plan to stop for an hour.
After lunch, the planned route is via the ruins of Brambletye House, Weir Wood reservoir and Boyle’s Farm. There’s a bunch of 6 slightly awkward stiles not long after the start. Alternatively, people can walk a shorter way back to East Grinstead via a disused railway which is level and shaded. It’s easy to follow and maps will be provided. Even simpler is to take a bus back to East Grinstead Station, from outside the Brambletye pub. The journey takes about 15 minutes.
Trains back to London at 06 and 36 minutes past the hour, journey time one hour. Mike
