Gerrards Cross to Cookham, 15 Mar
The walk is 10 miles, with no obvious drop out points.
Travel: 9.37 from London Marylebone (destination Oxford, West Ruislip is the edge of Travel zone). One stop to Gerrards Cross at 9.56. Buy a single to Gerrards Cross, as return is on a different line.
Return from Cookham via Maidenhead. There is an hourly train at 14 minutes past the hour from Cookham to Maidenhead. Freedom pass is valid on Elizabeth line trains only from Maidenhead to London stations. The edge of the travel zone is West Drayton for main line trains.
The bus from Cookham to Maidenhead is at 01 past the hour from the memorial.
Drop-out point? There are buses from places near the walk before lunch. The 583 at 12.25, 14.15. Or bus 301 hourly approximately 40 minutes past the hour. Both go to Slough. I will give directions at Hedgerley, but members should assume a full 10 mile walk.
Lunch: the Blackwood Arms, Littleworth Common nearly 6 miles into the walk. There is a small but pleasant place for a picnic near the pub, but also picnic tables in their car park area.
At the end of the walk, Cookham has a number of pubs and cafes.
The walk is mostly in woods, finishing along a reach of the Thames. There are hills, but nothing strenuous and only a couple of easy stiles. The main issue will be patches of mud and a boggy field. There are no long stretches of mud, but sticks will help with some. Waterproof shoes essential, although its hopefully drying out by the weekend.
Happy walking, Tony.
