Berwick to Glynde, 24 Sept
Here are details of the walk this Saturday. Unfortunately, the weather won’t be as perfect as for the recce, undertaken Monday, and there may be rain. Buy a return London to Berwick (our furthest point). Apologies for the early start, but darkness falls quickly these days. Our break points don’t conveniently coincide with lunch times etc. I have staged our stops where there is shelter in case of rain. Walk length is 11 miles,
Due to Engineering Works on 24 Sept, the train leaves from London Bridge [not Victoria] at 8.26, arriving Lewes at 9.29 [its final destination is Eastbourne] change at Lewes to catch the 9.48 from Lewes to our destination Berwick (arrives 9.57). Hopefully you’ll be able get a cuppa at Lewes. (There is an alternative journey from Blackfriars via Brighton but that involves an even earlier start and longer journey, so I have discounted it).
The first stage of the walk is Berwick station to Alfriston, stopping en route at St Michael’s church – of Bloomsbury murals fame – in Berwick village, and we’ll have elevenses at Alfriston. We then have a two-hour hike up over the Downs, heading for Charleston Farmhouse by about 2pm with time for a late lunch, and mooch around the Farmhouse, we’ll then leave for Firle where there is a pub (and church to view). After Firle, we’ll head for Glynde station where there are no facilities.
Please let Sally know if you need further details. (Non-members please contact firstname.lastname@example.org) Look forward to seeing you. And it would be helpful to know who’s coming.
