The Walk

8.5 to 9 miles.

Slow, steady, climb up the dip slope to the South Downs Way via Stanmer . Great views at the top and en route. 2 stiles. Some road walking through Lewes at the end. Interesting park to end and we aim to get there before the Sussex Guild craft shop and gallery closes at 5pm.

Travel

As on the programme: 8.54 from Victoria to Lewes. stops at Clapham Junction 9.01, East Croydon 9.12 , Lewes 9.58.

The change from the Victoria train at Lewes is tight – 5 minutes to climb stairs and cross bridge so we will wait at Lewes and have a coffee if we miss it and aim to start the walk at 10.40 at Falmer. There is a later train from Victoria leaving at 9. 24 but if you opt for that one you must make the change in 5 minutes to arrive at Falmer at 10.40.

The train via Brighton has a reasonable change time and leaves from London Bridge at 8.45. East Croydon at 8.59 Brighton 9.48 and change for Falmer at 10.01 arriving at 10.07. If you take this one wait for us at Falmer – no coffee there!

With a Freedom Pass the fare is £8.25 return .I will get on the train at Clapham Junction.

Regular trains home from Lewes to London, E Croydon, Clapham Junction

Food

We will stop at the attractive and interesting village of Stanmer for half an hour only for coffee after our early start and to fortify ourselves for the upward climb which follows.

Lunch is a picnic al fresco at Black Cap (Coronation wood) – about 2 hours after Stannmer . Weather looks OK – 21 degrees with about 20% chance of a shower

There are plenty of tea shops and pubs in Lewes at the end or buy tea and ice cream at the kiosk in Southover Park or at The Depot right by the station.

Hope to see you on Saturday.

Sue
