Guildford circular, 21 May

Published by Sigrid on

Train still as per programme, from Waterloo @ 09.45, arrives Guildford @ 10.24.

Morning: We’ll go up to Chantries woods then on to St. Martha’s – in good weather nice views along the way – this is the longer section  (ca. 5 m) and has up and downs. From St. Martha’s down to Chilworth (lunch stop) we’ll join a steep, quite ragged path, so a walking pole would be handy if needed. (NB: terrain around and from St. Martha’s is deep sand, in case anyone intends to wear walking sandals)

Lunch: Lunch at Chilworth, The Percy Arms – those wishing to eat in the pub, please let me know by Thursday 19 May as I’ll have to confirm numbers. You can check out menu options here http://www.thepercyarms.net/assets/pdf/2-Feb-2022-a-la-carte.pdf#view=fit. For picnickers there’s an area with picnic tables en-route to the pub about 6 minutes walk away.

Break-off point: Chilworth has a railway station with a two-hourly service back to Guildford (ie: 13.27 or 15.27 departure, journey approx 10 mins). Anyone wishing to use the train from there would need to purchase a return ticket to Chilworth not Guildford. Alternatively, the Bus No. 32 has an hourly service from Chilworth to Guildford Friars Bus station (departing 13.31 or 14.31, journey approx 15 mins). Both the station and the bus stop are across the road from the pub.

Afternoon: This section is a bit shorter (ca. 4 m) and takes us back via the lower level of the Chantries towards the river Wey, mainly on the flat. Due to the lock nr Guildford still being closed off we’ll have to take a minor diversion both morning and afternoon.

Happy walking, Sigrid
