Sat 22 Jan: new route and start time

Published by Morley Ramblers on

This walk’s route and start time has changed because Brentford are playing Wolves at home and it is not the best of days to find a lunch spot.  Please note we will assemble at Richmond Station half an hour earlier than advertised:  at 10 am not 10.30 am.

Please let the walk organiser, Sue C, know if you are planning to come and if you want to have lunch in/ or on the outside terrace of the pub and Sue will book a table. See below (let Sue know please by Tuesday p.m,18 January; non-members please email walks@morleyramblers.uk).

We will walk around the Towpath on the South (passing Kew Gardens) side of the towpath but instead of going to Brentford we will walk on to the Ship Inn at Mortlake, which will be our lunch stop:  estimate12-12.15 am: for an early lunch. Sue recommends coming into the pub/ seated pub garden even if you just have a drink as spaces to linger on the towpath are limited.

After lunch we proceed past Mortlake Station ( a drop off point – frequent trains back to London or back into Richmond). It is about 5.5 to 6 miles at this point.

We then walk through suburban Mortlake to the South Side of Richmond Park.  The afternoon is weather dependent (sunset or no sunset). We will either walk up through the Park up to the top of Richmond Hill or peel off via East  Sheen Common and take an interesting detour through the Old Richmond Cemetery and Albany Passage down into Richmond where we there are plenty of refreshment options.

Total walking distance circa 10.5 miles.

Cautions:

Please note the towpath and the  paths in the park are both muddy and (sadly for some) dogs may be plentiful on this stretch. There are no public toilets in the morning section of the walk.  If any walker has a Kew Gardens ‘guest’ membership could they please bring it as there could  be a potential ‘water’ break near the Brentford Gate.
