Published by Morley Ramblers on

Please contact the Leader, Terry, by email or phone by 12noon on Friday 14th January if you wish to lunch at the pub, so that Terry can book a table(s) for the corrrect number. (Non-members please contact walks@morleyramblers.uk)
Train departure, as in the walks programme, is 9.28am from Kings Cross, arriving 9.55 at Welwyn Garden City.

Summary of walk

Terry found it very hard going on the recce because of almost continuous mud which could not be walked around. It also meant the walk took much longer than usual. Therefore he’s changed the route to avoid the muddiest sections, but it does mean more walking on country roads.
The morning has a walk through a large wood, a long stretch along a disused railway line and a final section through country lanes to our lunch stop at Ayot St. Lawrence. Those who picnic can follow their lunch by going to the pub for a drink and to keep warm while those having lunch in the pub finish their meals. Ayot St Lawrence has an atmospheric, ruined Gothic church, which there should be time to visit.
The afternoon starts with country lanes, then the landscaped parkland of Ayot Montfitchet stately home, before rejoining the disused railway line and the walk through the woods back to Welwyn Garden City station.

Dropout Points

Unfortunately, there are no dropout points on this walk.

Hazards

The walk is mostly level with only gentle, small ascents and descents. Due to mud, it could be slippy in the parts of the walk which are not on country lanes. Also, although the lanes are usually quiet, they are narrow and there will be the occasional motor vehicle, so everyone will need to take care to keep to the side of the road.
