This week’s walk (23 October) Apsley to Hemel Hempstead
A 10-mile linear ramble (buy day return to Hemel Hempstead) – train from Euston railway station, depart 09.33, arrive Apsley 10.02. This walk is mainly on the flat with some undulating sections. We’ll walk along large fields and through some woods and along the way you’ll meet grazing cattle and horses. The paths along the fields can be muddy and slippery, esp if it rains before or on the day, so please wear sturdy boots and use a walking pole if required.
Lunch stop is in a village called Belsize (not to be confused with Belsize Park in London!). The Plough is not a large pub, it serves full mains and light meals (https://www.theploughatbelsize.co.uk/info). I’ll have to reserve space for anyone who wishes to eat in the pub . Please let me know by no later than Wednesday if you wish to eat in the pub. Picnic eaters coming in for a drink will have to find space in the bar area or, weather permitting, can sit outside in the garden, a small area is under cover (weather forecast is for cooler temperatures).
Break-off point from Belsize – bus stops across from the pub:
Option 1: There is a two-hourly bus service (No. 352) to Hemel Hempstead railway station leaving at 12.50pm (this would not give enough time for having either lunch in the pub or a drink after picnic), the next bus will leave at 14.50pm. There are four trains per hour from Hemel Hempstead to London Euston.
Option 2: Same two-hourly bus in the opposite direction (end station Watford) leaves at 13.44pm – get off at Croxley Underground station from where you can pick up the Metropolitan line to central London (NB: Important that you check that the Metropolitan line is running on the day if you wish to go for option 2).
