This week’s walk (14 August) from Bearstead

Published by Morley Ramblers on

We did a second recce for this walk on 6 August. ( the first was bedevilled by farmers having ploughed and planted over the footpaths and parking a stallion in the way!)  We have decided to shorten the walk and end at Hollingbourne due to the hilly morning and the long and rather tedious final afternoon trek along the Pilgrim’s Way to Harrietsham. There is no drop out point at lunchtime.

Food:  The morning is long and we do not expect to get to the pub ( Hook and Hatchett at Hucking) until around 2pm. We are not going to book in advance – there is plenty of outdoor seating and they are able to cope with groups. We will stop at a viewpoint near Thurnham around 12.30 for you to have a snack before tackling the N Downs Way.

Terrain: There are a couple of v steep, hill ascents on quiet roads in the morning but the main thing to be aware of is that the section of the North Downs Way we will travel is very muddy and slippy after all this rain. Some of the steps on the descents have been washed away. You will need sticks and footwear with good treads. There is a mix of full woodland shade and some open fields.

Transport: Train leaves Victoria at 9.25 as advertised. There is a replacement bus service from Maidstone East

If you have a senior railcard get a return from Swanley to Hollingbourne. Return trains are two an hour – one to Victoria and one to St Pancras via Ashford – both include the replacement bus.

The weather looks much better! Regards, Sue
