This week’s walk (24 July). Winchester Circular

Published by Morley Ramblers on

I look forward to seeing those of you who want to walk on Saturday. Here are some additional details and slight amendments.

The train to get from Waterloo is the 9.35, arriving at Winchester at 10.32.This train does not stop at Clapham. This is the cheapest and most straightforward train to get. For those who want to start at Clapham, there is a train at 9.27 arriving at Winchester at 10.32 but you change at Woking. We will set off through the city at 10.40. There are plenty of return trains but I have provisionally booked myself on the 17.18 which does stop at Clapham Junction reaching there at 18.12 and 18.19 at Waterloo.

The lunch stop is at Shawford, I have booked a table there at 1pm. Please let me know if you want to eat at the Chef and Brewer Pub there. They are stil operating social distancing so please let me know also if you just want a drink instead of food and I will try to reserve a table for you.The pub is now the only show in town, the little cafe is now a bike shop.

We will leave the pub by 2 so we can try to get in to the ‘100 Men’s Hall’ at St Cross for afternoon tea. For those completing at Shawford there is a train back to Winchester at 14.19.

There is one steepish hill at the beginning of the day, only one. If it has been raining please bring a stick as the chalk will be slippery. If it is anything like as warm as today then I will shorten the afternoon walk to go alongside the river back to Winchester via St Cross. It is very pleasant and I tried the route out yesterday because of the heat.

Things to bring:

FACE MASKS ETC as social distancing still applies in pub and at St Cross.

I really look forward to seeing you. Please let me know if you are planning to come. Sue C  (enquiries from non-members:
